Struggling to Love Yourself? Here’s How To Overcome The Problem

Have you ever wondered why you keep failing to love yourself, especially when you need it the most? The reason might lie in the way you see self-love and yourself. To start with, self-love has been misunderstood as an act of selfishness. However, in this season of love, let's all agree that self-love is not a practice of being self-centric nor indulgent. On the contrary, self-love is an art that everyone needs to survive. Amidst the smothering pressure of high social expectation, it is very easy to hate what we see in front of the mirror. Instead of embracing our failures, we blame ourselves for the shortcomings, believe in our inner criticism and let ourselves fall into depression.

No one is born with an innate ability to love herself. It is not a personal trait that a person is born with. Self-love is rather a basic-life skill that can be learnt. Your ability to acquire this skill, however, is influenced by your self-image - the way we perceive ourselves as a person and independent being, and how you feel about it. These two elements of self-concept - identity, are gradually developed from the early stage of your childhood to early adulthood. It is also linked to your inner circle and the environment you lived in when you were a kid.

Psychologists suggest that those who keep failing to practise self-love, might have an issue with self-image and tend to possess a low self-esteem. It is not 100% your fault and it can be altered. Below, 1 People curated a handful of tips that you can learn to acquire the ability to love yourself. And thus, make your life happier.

-Positive affirmation. Start each day by telling yourself something really positive. How well you handled a situation, how lovely you look today. Anything that will make you smile.

-Create self-love rituals. Spending time and money on yourself is not indulgent. Switch the way you see “me time” if the phrase means an unnecessary luxury. Think of it as a need to get to know yourself better and to unwind. You have worked hard. You deserve some treat. But remember, this suggestion doesn’t mean to irresponsibly spend a lot of money for materialistic things that you already have.

-Healthy lifestyle. There is a huge chance for you to love the reflection you in the mirror if you take good care of your mind, body and soul. Do more exercise, eat healthy and change a bad sleeping habit. Frolic in nature and enjoy sunshine.

Try these tips at home and make them your routine. Then you’ll realise, sooner or later, that the person you used to be hard on also deserves all the love you have in heart.
